About

The Photographer

My name is Teo Utting and I live on the east Norfolk coast in the UK. My interest in both photography and space stretches back to childhood — a fascination that has never really left me.

I started out with a small automatic film camera in the late seventies and early eighties, progressing to a Praktica SLR in the mid eighties. Having only 36 shots on a roll of film was a genuine discipline — you thought carefully about what you wanted to capture. Back then it was friends, moments, life happening around us. Later it became more about family, particularly with the arrival of my first son in the early nineties.

As time moved on I switched to digital. The number of pictures became limited only by the size of your memory card rather than a roll of film. Early digital was expensive, but eventually I moved through a bridge camera and on to a DSLR — variations of which I still use today.

My current focus is capturing what's going on around me, which is why street photography feels so natural. I particularly enjoyed shooting life in Toronto and New York on a recent family trip, though I'm happy to turn the camera on most things — especially if they're a little out of the ordinary.

With a lifelong interest in space, linking photography to the night sky felt like an obvious step. What began with a DSLR, a wide angle lens and a star tracker has progressed through various stages to the rig I use today.

Street Photography

My street work is shot on a Nikon D7500, paired with one of three lenses depending on the situation:

  • Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art — my go-to for wider environmental shots, exceptional sharpness and that fast aperture handles low light beautifully
  • Nikon 50mm f/1.8G — the classic nifty fifty, light and unobtrusive, ideal for everyday street work
  • Nikon 85mm f/1.8G — for more portrait-oriented work, keeping a comfortable distance from the subject

Astrophotography

My current astro rig has evolved considerably over the years and now consists of:

  • Mount: SkyWatcher EQM-35 Pro — computer controlled GoTo mount
  • Telescope: SkyWatcher ED72 — a wide field refractor with ZWO motorised focuser
  • Camera: Altair Astro Hypercam 533C — cooled dedicated astro camera
  • Guiding: Guide scope and guide camera for precise tracking
  • Control: Mini PC running NINA acquisition software
